The Black Convict Cichlid, scientifically known as Amatitlania nigrofasciata, is a robust and striking species native to Central America. Renowned for its bold black and white stripes, this cichlid is a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts for its hardiness and interesting behavior.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Features distinctive vertical black stripes on a light gray to blue body, resembling a convict's uniform, hence the name.
  • Smaller in size compared to other cichlids, adults can reach up to 4-5 inches (10-12.5 cm) in length.
  • Males typically larger than females and may display longer fins and more vibrant colors.

Natural Habitat:

  • Originally found in the streams and lakes of Central America, from Costa Rica to Panama.
  • Thrives in a variety of water conditions, often in areas with rocky substrates and dense vegetation.

Care and Aquarium Setup:

  • The tank should include hiding places such as caves, rocks, and driftwood to mimic their natural environment.
  • Water conditions should be maintained with a pH of 6.5-8.0 and temperatures between 76-80°F (24-27°C).

Diet:

  • Omnivorous by nature, Black Convict Cichlids will eat a wide range of foods including pellets, flakes, live and frozen foods.
  • A balanced diet is essential for their health and coloration.

Behaviour and Compatibility:

  • Known for their aggressive territorial behavior, especially during breeding.
  • Best kept with fish of similar size and temperament to avoid conflicts.
