The Female Betta, a variant of the renowned Betta fish or Siamese Fighting Fish, is a captivating species for aquarium enthusiasts. While they may not be as flamboyantly coloured or finned as their male counterparts, female Bettas possess their own unique charm and characteristics. Because of this, we cannot guarantee the betta you receive will be an exact match to those pictured.

Appearance: Female Bettas are generally smaller and less colourful than males, with shorter fins. However, they can still display a range of colours, from pastels to vibrant hues. Their fins are rounded, and they lack the elongated finnage that is the hallmark of male Bettas.

Temperament: Contrary to popular belief, female Bettas can also be territorial and may show aggression towards other Bettas. However, they are typically less aggressive than males. With careful observation and management, it is possible to house multiple females together in a "sorority" tank, though this requires a carefully structured environment to minimize conflict.

Tank Requirements: Female Bettas thrive in a well-filtered aquarium with a steady temperature between 23° and 29°C, similar to their male counterparts. A minimum tank size of 5 litres is recommended for a single female Betta, but larger tanks are necessary for sororities to provide adequate space for each fish.

Diet: Like male Bettas, females are carnivorous and should be fed a diet rich in protein. This can include high-quality Betta pellets or flakes, frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Overfeeding should be avoided to prevent health issues.

Tank Setup: Females appreciate a habitat with ample hiding spaces and soft-leaved plants, which provide shelter and reduce stress. A varied landscape with caves, driftwood, and both floating and anchored plants will mimic their natural environment and encourage exploration.

Breeding: Female Bettas can be bred with males, but this should be done cautiously and only for short periods. The female should be removed from the male's tank after spawning to avoid aggression. She does not participate in raising the fry.

Community Tank Compatibility: Female Bettas can be kept in community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. However, care must be taken to avoid housing them with fin-nipping species or those that may mistake their flowing fins for food.

Health Care: Regular water changes and tank maintenance are crucial for preventing diseases. Common health issues include fin rot and fungal infections, which can be managed with proper care and prompt treatment.

Overall, female Bettas offer an intriguing alternative to their male counterparts for aquarists. Their subtler beauty and potential for community living make them a versatile and engaging choice for both novice and experienced fish keepers.
