Sidthimunki Botia Loach (Ambastaia sidthimunki)

The Sidthimunki Botia Loach, commonly known as the Dwarf Chain Loach, is a small, active freshwater fish native to the Chao Phraya and Mekong river basins in Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Typically reaches a maximum length of 6 cm (2.5 inches).
  • Colouration: Features a pale yellowish body adorned with distinctive black markings that form a chain-like pattern along its sides.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful and social, thriving in groups of at least five individuals.
  • Activity Level: Active swimmers, often seen darting around the aquarium.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 20 gallons (approximately 80 litres) is recommended for a small group.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots using rocks, driftwood, and plants. A fine, soft substrate is ideal to protect their delicate barbels.

Diet:

Omnivorous, feeding on a variety of foods including high-quality pellets, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms, and occasional vegetable matter.

Tankmates:

Peaceful species such as small tetras, rasboras, and other non-aggressive fish are suitable companions. Avoid keeping with larger or aggressive species that may outcompete them for food.

Breeding:

Breeding in captivity is rare and not well-documented.

Conservation Status:

In its native habitat, the Sidthimunki Botia Loach is considered critically endangered due to overfishing and habitat loss. Conservation efforts are in place to protect wild populations.

In summary, the Sidthimunki Botia Loach is a charming and active addition to community aquariums, provided their specific care requirements are met.
