Butterfly fish come in all shapes and sizes and are well known for their brightly coloured bodies and elaborate markings. The butterfly fish can be difficult fish to keep as they need very specific water conditions that need regular and close monitoring to ensure they are stable. Most butterfly fish are not reef safe as they will pick at corals. Others are a great benefit to reef aquariums as they can target pest's in the aquarium with their long snouts. Many have dots on their bodies which are used in the wild to make them look like a larger fish to predators.
