Uaru Cichlid

The Uaru Cichlid (*Uaru amphiacanthoides*) is a captivating freshwater fish native to the Amazon River Basin, particularly in regions of Brazil and Colombia. Known for their unique appearance and sociable behaviour, Uaru Cichlids are popular among aquarists seeking a community fish that adds beauty and activity to their tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Uaru Cichlids can grow to about 20-25 cm (8-10 inches) in length, making them a moderate-sized cichlid.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: They have a distinctive oval body shape with a light brown or tan base colour, often adorned with dark spots and bands that can vary among individuals.
    • Fins: The fins are typically transparent with a slight reddish or orange hue, particularly in males. The overall colouration can change with mood and environmental conditions.
    • Shape: Uaru Cichlids have a relatively flat body with a pronounced forehead, contributing to their unique profile.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Uaru Cichlids are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of other species. However, they may become territorial during breeding.
  • Activity Level: They are active swimmers, often seen foraging along the substrate or interacting with tankmates. Their social behaviour makes them entertaining to watch.
  • Community Behaviour: Uaru Cichlids can thrive in community tanks, provided they are housed with compatible species that are not overly aggressive or small enough to be seen as prey.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 190 litres (50 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Uaru Cichlids, as they require ample swimming space.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: They thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: Uaru Cichlids prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-15 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is ideal for Uaru Cichlids, along with plenty of hiding spots created by rocks, driftwood, and live plants. They appreciate a well-planted tank that mimics their natural habitat.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is preferred, as they originate from areas with dappled sunlight in their natural environment.
    • Filtration: A strong filtration system is important to maintain water quality. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) will help prevent the buildup of harmful substances.

Diet:

Uaru Cichlids are omnivorous and require a balanced diet to thrive:

  • Pellets: High-quality cichlid pellets or granules should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetation: They also enjoy blanched vegetables, such as zucchini or spinach, which help mimic their natural foraging behaviour.

Breeding:

Breeding Uaru Cichlids can be rewarding with the right conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with a substrate for nesting and flat surfaces for egg-laying is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic.
  • Spawning Behaviour: Uaru Cichlids are known to form strong pair bonds. The female will lay eggs on flat surfaces, which the male will then fertilise. Both parents often take turns guarding the eggs.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or finely crushed flakes until they are large enough to consume pellets.

Special Considerations:

  • Social Structure: Uaru Cichlids are social fish that benefit from being kept in groups. However, it's essential to ensure that the tank is spacious enough to prevent territorial disputes.
  • Water Quality: Maintaining excellent water quality is crucial for the health of Uaru Cichlids. Regular monitoring and maintenance are necessary to keep them healthy.
