The Sterbai Corydora
The Sterbai Corydora (*Corydoras sterbai*) is a popular freshwater fish known for its striking appearance and peaceful nature. Native to the rivers and streams of Brazil, particularly in the Rio Araguaia basin, this species is a favorite among aquarists for its sociable behavior and attractive coloration.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: Sterbai Corydoras typically grow to about 5-7 cm (2-2.8 inches) in length.
- Coloration:
- Body: They have a light brown to yellowish body covered with small, dark spots that give them a speckled appearance. The distinctive white belly adds to their charm.
- Fins: Their fins are usually translucent with dark edges, complementing the overall coloration of the body.
- Shape: The body is slightly elongated and flattened, which is typical for corydoras species.
Behavior:
- Temperament: Sterbai Corydoras are peaceful and social fish that thrive in groups. They are non-aggressive and can coexist with a variety of tankmates.
- Activity Level: These catfish are active bottom dwellers, often foraging for food and exploring their environment. They enjoy being part of a community and will interact with their tankmates.
- Community Behavior: Sterbai Corydoras do well in community tanks with other peaceful species and prefer to be kept in groups of at least six to feel secure.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 30 liters (8 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Sterbai Corydoras.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: They thrive in warmer water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
- pH: A slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 is preferred.
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-12 dGH, is ideal.
- Tank Setup:
- Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is recommended to protect their delicate barbels. They appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, as live plants provide security and help reduce stress. Floating plants and dense vegetation can mimic their natural habitat.
- Lighting: Subdued lighting is preferred, as they are native to dimly lit environments. Floating plants or leaves can help create natural, shaded areas.
- Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended to maintain clean water without creating strong currents, as corydoras generally prefer calmer waters.
Diet:
- Sterbai Corydoras are omnivorous and benefit from a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:
- Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets formulated for bottom feeders should form the staple of their diet.
- Live or Frozen Foods: They thrive on live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms, which provide essential protein and mimic their natural diet.
- Vegetable Matter: Include plant-based foods such as spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables to ensure a balanced diet.
Tankmates:
- Sterbai Corydoras can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates. Suitable tankmates include:
- Small rasboras: Such as Harlequin Rasboras or Chili Rasboras.
- Dwarf gouramis: Peaceful species like Sparkling Gouramis.
- Corydoras catfish: Different species of corydoras can coexist well together.
- Peaceful bottom-dwellers: Like Kuhli loaches.
